Advanced Knowledge and Skills for Sustainable Growth Project in Indonesia (AKSI) will support advanced skills and knowledge for sustainable economic growth in Indonesia with the increase of three state universities in Sumatra and one State University in Bandung, West Java, as the first phase of higher education reform. The project will support new facilities and equipment, strengthen staff capacity, support education and quality research driven by demand aligned with local economic priorities, and strengthen vocational teacher education. The project is aligned with the Indonesian Medium term Development plan (RPJMN) 2015-2019, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Partnership strategy for Indonesia, 2016-2019, both highlights the important role of vocational and tertiary education in providing Skilled human resources are needed to support economic growth and social development of Indonesia.
The project aims to strengthen the access, relevance, and quality of the University of Malikussaleh (UNIMAL), the University of Jambi (UNJA), the University of Riau (UNRI), and the University of Education of Indonesia (UPI). The scope of work includes three categories of activities: (i) the development of teaching and research facilities, supporting infrastructure and equipment procurement; (ii) The development and improvement of the quality of human resources, including non-degree degrees and programmes for lecturers and university staff; and (iii) academic development of curricula and management systems to enhance the teaching and research process, particularly in a special focus area, with the aim of being a center of excellence. Investments in UNIMAL, UNJA, and UNRI are aligned with local economic priorities and will focus the center of Excellence on sustainable natural resources, agriculture, and marine science and the waters. UPI will focus its excellence center on TVET-guru’s education to meet national priorities for highly skilled skills and human resources.
